Chances are that you have heard of - or consumed - hard water. If you have hard water in your home, you probably have a few stains on your dishes, but is it ruining your home?
What is Limescale?
Limescale is a chalky, hard deposit caused by prolonged use of hard water. It is formed when hard water evaporates, leaving behind minerals to build up over time It is often found in mental machinery, equipment, faucets, sinks, pipework, and other places that involve water. It more commonly builds up in places hot water is found, such as kettles, boilers, and water heaters.
What is Hard Water
Soft water is low in minerals, whereas hard water has high mineral content. Hard water typically has high amounts of calcium or magnesium carbonate. When hard water is used, it leaves behind small deposits of minerals. Over time the minerals build up, forming a limescale.
How Hard Water Can Impact Your Home
Hard water isn’t generally dangerous to drink, but it can be harmful to your home.
corrodes pipes
decreases efficiency
requires maintenance
shortens lifespan of appliances
As limescale builds up, it can be an eyesore and decrease the efficiency of your pipes and water heaters. The build-up in pipes decreases the inside space, decreasing the efficiency of the pipes. The buildup on water heaters makes it harder for the appliance to heat water, driving up the energy bill.
What Places Have Hard Water
Hard water is found where the minerals are found. It can be found across most of the US.
Including right here in Spring TX.
What You Can Do About It
There are many home remedies to help cut back on limescale, all with varying degrees of efficiency.
For some spaces such as faucets and sinks, you can sprinkle baking soda on the affected area, then add vinegar and leave for 4 hours. Then pour boiling water over the area to wash away residue.
